William Richardson Davie (1756-1820) was a lawyer, state legislator, Revolutionary officer, member of the United States Constitutional Convention, Federalist governor of North Carolina, and peace commissioner to France, and was influential in the founding of the University of North Carolina. Spaight was a delegate to the U.S. Contential Congress, 1782-1785, from North Carolina, as well as the U.S. Constitutional Convention, 1787, and signator to the U.S. Constitution. He was Governor of North Carolina, 1792-1795, held other public offices in the North Carolina and was in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1798-1801.
