Autograph letter signed, dated : Hamburg, 7 February 1893, to [Gisella Tolney-Witt, later Gisela Selden-Goth], 1893 Feb. 7.

Answering her question about "why such a large apparatus as an orchestra should be necessary in order to express a great thought," explaining that earlier music was more elementary, less complex, more like chamber music, that as music evolved it imitated not only the fundamentals, such as mood, but also the transition from one to another--the conflicts--, that the concert halls and audiences have become larger--in short: "We moderns need such a great apparatus in order to express our ideas, great or small," etc.
