Autograph letter signed, dated : Moscow, 5 February 1938, to Nikolay Andreyevich [Malko], 1938 Feb. 5.

Thanking him for a performance of Kabalevsky's symphony, saying that "I do not belong to that set of composers who do not permit any discussion of their work. On the contrary: I dislike acclaim, but very much like sincere and intelligent critiques," discussing (with a brief musical example) a "difficult spot" for the second violins in the Finale [of the symphony], saying that he shares Malko's disappointment at the difficulty of obtaining new scores by Soviet composers, mentioning Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Myaskovsky's 17th and 18th Symphonies, a concerto by Khachaturian, adding that his first opera, Colas Breugnon (based on the story [Le maître de Clamecy] by Romain Rolland), will have its première on 15 February, conducted by Boris Khaikin, etc.
