Élève de Natoire à l’école de l’Académie, Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (1713-1789) obtint le premier prix de peinture en 1734. Il fut reçu à l’Académie en 1742. Recteur en 1768, directeur de l’Académie en 1778, puis directeur des Gobelins, il devint premier peintre du roi en 1770, en remplacement de Boucher.
