William B. Lorton diaries and papers, 1848 Sept - 1850 Jan.

Records travels in New York, Canada and the Midwest, then overland via the Mormon Trail, Salt Lake and the southern road to Los Angeles. Throughout California Lorton was in the company of various parties associated with Death Valley. Three diaries (v. 6-8) include a few sketches enroute. Also includes photocopies of three letters (May 9 & June 30, 1849, and Jan. 20, 1850) from Lorton, published in the New York Sun (v. 9). Also available only on microfilm are a few miscellaneous papers that were retained by the family which include Lorton's New York Militia commission.
