The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Edwin Eliott Willoughby was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 5, 1899, the eldest of the three children of printer Frank Faul Willoughby and his wife Annie (Smith) Willoughby. While Edwin was still a child, the family moved to New Jersey.
