The records pre-date the inception of the Dean's Office in 1906, and chronicle the administrative reforms and modernization within the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly the growth of participatory democracy; recruitment of women and minority faculty members; increasing specialization within the curriculum; tenure issues; and expanding campus enrollment corresponding with the growth of a diverse and talented faculty.
