This collection contains the records of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and covers the founding of the society in 1906 as the American Society of Biological Chemists through 2005. Materials included are the documents of the various committees, individuals, and groups responsible for the running of the society. The majority of the collection covers the last half of the 20th century. Highlights include the records of the Executive Council, Officers, and President (Series I); correspondence and publication records for the Journal of Biological Chemistry and the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics (Series II); records of the Membership committee (Series III); and the records of the annual meetings from 1934 to 2002 are located in Series IV. Series V contains materials relating to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, the International Union of Biochemistry, and other affiliated organizations.

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) was founded as an offshoot of the American Physiological Society in 1906. The original name for the organization was the American Society for Biological Chemists but the name was changed in 1987 to better accomodate molecular biologists.
