The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) was founded as an offshoot of the American Physiological Society in 1906. The original name for the organization was the American Society for Biological Chemists but the name was changed in 1987 to better accomodate molecular biologists. The Society has grown from the original 29 founding members to over 11,000 members in 2005. ASBMB has been closely aligned with the American Physiologial Society, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, often resulting in joint conferences and publications. Annual meetings for the ASBMB began in 1934. The Society publishes the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. Additional information about the formation of the ASBMB can be found in Russell H. Chittenden's work, "The First Twenty-Five Years of the American Society of Biological Chemists," published in 1945; a copy of this text is located in Series III, Subseries II.
