Cazayoux family papers, 1929-1999 (bulk 1939-1979).

Collection consists primarily of family correspondence and scrapbooks that reflect the careers, religious beliefs and close familial bonds of the Cazayoux family. Letters written by Clair during his stay at Jesuit missions in Ceylon and India give insight into the political and social conditions of the time. Topics include the assassination of Prime Minister Bandaranaike of Ceylon (Sept. 28, Oct. 13, 1959), participation of the communists in political elections (Sept. 1959-March 1960), cultural differences, living conditions, interaction with the local people, and a threat of war with China. His letters also make references to the Soviet Union shooting down an American U-2 spy plane (May 13, May 22, July 20,1960), the American satellite, Echo (Aug. 8, 1960), the U.S. presidential election of 1960 (Jan.-July 1960), and the Louisiana gubernatorial election (Sept. 24, 1959, Jan. 18, 1960). Letters of Captain Robert Cazayoux, a military doctor in South Korea, recount daily activities, living conditions, and the rampant spread of venereal disease among the troops. Letters of Lieutenant Francis Cazayoux describe events and living conditions aboard ship (May 30, 1953) and South Korea. He reports on a major mudslide near Sinpori, Korea, that blocked the movement of military troops and supplies (June 29, 1953). He also describes visits to Tokyo and Yokosuka. In her letters, Inez Cazayoux describes her visits to London, Ceylon, Jerusalem, and Rome and the ordination of Clair into the priesthood (March-April 1962). Letters from Gene Cazayoux reflect his life in the community of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. General correspondence concerns family matters, visits, church services, and religious education, and includes a letter in French from C.M. Cazayoux to his grandchild (Dec. 29, 1936). Correspondence also contains several religious greeting cards, many with spiritual bouquets. Writings contain sermons of Clair Cazayoux (1960, n.d.) and speeches and journal pages recounting Vivian's travels to Europe, Mexico, Canada, Ceylon and the Holy Land (1952-1962), and the New York World's Fair (1939). Printed items include Clair's Christmas newsletters (1956-1963), the military publication, HASE HOT ROD (May 28, 1953), issues of SOUTHERN JESUIT (Aug. 1956, June 1962), and the JESUIT (summer, fall 1999), also photographs of Clair Cazayoux (1962, n.d.) are included. Scrapbooks reflect the activities and careers of the Cazayoux family members. They relate the activities of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority (1939-1944); social, school and community activities of the Cazayoux children and grandchildren; and the careers of Vivian, Gene and Clair Cazayoux.
