Diary kept by W. P. Hubbard during his junior year at Wesleyan University, January 1-February 18, and June 1-30, 1862. The first entry reveals Hubbard's intents: to keep a diary for future information and amusement and to chronicle his college life, including jokes and anecdotes. He writes extensively about his classes, which included German, Latin, mechanics, and physiology, about his professors, and about jokes played in class. Hubbard mentions what he did in his leisure hours: playing whist, cleaning his room, ice skating, sledding, reading, going to church and to parties. He also went to singing school and in June, he took up crew. Although Hubbard attended the Methodist Church, he did not care for the usual minister, Mr. Woodruff, and wrote disparagingly of him in the diary. Hubbard was proud to be elected vice-president of the Junior Class and treasurer of the Peithologian Society. He enjoyed using a fellow student's microscope, which the student had built himself, along with some other scientific instruments. Hubbard mentions the war, but seemed to have no interest in joining the army. He was not sympathetic to African-Americans or to Jews. Hubbard also writes about his own feelings: his worries about what he will do after college, his favorite authors, how he misses his family, etc. Parts of the diary are written in code, but he later translated a few of the passages. The diary gives a good picture of the life of this student.
