Martha G. Fales and Dean A. Fales, Jr., American Armorial Index, ca.1750-ca.2000.

A collection of bookplates, research notes, trade cards, watch papers, bills (some with printed billheads, some on plain paper), advertisements, prints, paper currency, drawings, invitations and tickets, lottery tickets, a music book, and reward of merit cards, collected by Martha and Dean Fales during their study of the use of coats of arms by Americans. Many of the bookplates do bear coats of arms, although most of the other items do not. The bookplates are those of individuals as well as those of college or circulating libraries. Engravers or designers of bookplates include Paul Revere, Nathaniel Hurd, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Callender, Alexander Anderson, and others. Most of the bookplates date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The watch papers bear the names of Seymour Hoyt, Seth Shearman, B. & M.M. Swan, Charles Swift, D. Walker, and Gerrish & Pearson. The ads are for an assortment of products; most are from the second half of the 19th century; the oldest ad is that of Mr. Chapman, who was a silhouette cutter in the early part of the century. The architectural views (of buildings in Philadelphia, Boston, and Salem, Mass.) have been removed from books. The currency consists of shilling notes from Delaware, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, and are dated 1776-1785. There are two colored drawings of ships. The invitations and tickets folder includes notices of meetings of fire societies and a militia company, a ticket to the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, an invitation to a dance, a ticket for a medical lecture, an admission ticket to a hospital, and a membership certificate. Two lottery tickets are from Massachusetts (1777, 1779), and the third is dated 1788, but no place is specified. There is a copy of The Essex Harmony by David Bayley (a collection of hymn tunes, 1771). Three bills addressed to Samuel Stearns of Boston are dated 1801-1822, and are for jewelry, silver, and other metal goods. The bills with printed billheads are for furniture, jewelry, gloves, and china; they date 1813-1857. Among the prints are portraits, pictures of cupids or cherubs at work, a cartoon about a fight in Congress in 1798, and an illustration depicting the steps in the processes of etching and engraving. The reward of merit cards are printed in black and white, one by Nathaniel Dearborn. The trade cards are for a variety of vendors: several trunk makers, a San Francisco watchmaker, a Calcutta chronometer maker, several bookbinders and book sellers, a tailor, and a goldsmith/jeweler. Most of the trade cards are from New England. As well, the collection includes research notes about bookplates, the Great Seal of the United States, the use of coats of arms, early American currency, hatchments, and a booklet published by Bailey, Banks & Biddle on the proper uses of heraldry in the U.S.
