Martha Gandy Fales, M'Lou, was a fellow in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture and has a master's degree from the University of Delaware, class of 1954. She was Keeper of Silver at the H.F du Pont Winterthur Museum and over the years has served as a consultant to museums and historical societies. In addition to her work on the Richardson family of Philadelphia silversmiths, Mrs. Fales has researched and published on American decorative arts and jewelry.

Martha Fales was married to Dean A. Fales, Jr. He was registrar at Winterthur Museum and taught in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture. He then became director of the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts, and later served as a consultant to various institutions. He published books about American furniture and was also knowledgeable about pewter.
