Papers, c.1960-1992.

Collection reflects Mary Black's professional career, especially her interest in American artists working in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. In addition to correspondence, there are many notes, photographs, and slides that she assembled while trying to identify artists of unsigned portraits. Copies of drafts of articles and books on early American portraiture are included, and she kept many letters relating to the identification of artists of unsigned works that are now part of this collection. Holdings also reflect work that she did on exhibitions and seminars, especially a 1967 seminar and exhibit at the New York Historical Society about patroon painters and Upper Hudson Valley art. Collection has especially noteworthy information about the Duyckinck family, Erastus Salisbury Field, Nehemiah Partridge, and Ammi Phillips.
