Dresser Family Papers

Prominent Springfield, Illinois family descended from Rev. Charles Dresser, the first Episcopal Rector of St. Paul’s Parish in Springfield. The Dresser family immigrated to Springfield from Virginia in 1838. Rev. Dresser was the minister who married Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd, and later sold his home on 8th and Jackson Streets in Springfield to the Lincolns. In 1855 Rev. Dresser became a faculty member at Jubilee College near Peoria, Illinois, where he taught for a few years. Rev. Dresser and his wife Louisa Withers Dresser were the parents of eleven children, one of whom was Dr. Thomas Dresser, a physician to Mary Todd Lincoln in her final illness. Dr. Dresser and his wife Margaret Doremus Dresser had one daughter, Katherine. She married the Rev. John Chanler White, Episcopal Bishop of Springfield from 1924 to 1947. Correspondence, published material and genealogical material. The collection primarily concerns Rev. Charles Dresser and Dr. Thomas W. Dresser. Correspondence to Rev. Dresser from Philander Chase, the founder of Jubilee College, is included. Material relating to the Withers, Caldwell, Ulrich, Von Reisenkampf and Leman families is in the collection. Catalogues from St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland; Brown University; and University of Louisiana are also included.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
