Frank Albert Root was born 3 July 1837 in Binghampton, New York. He left northeastern Pennsylvania in 1857, joining thousands of other pioneers moving to Kansas territory. He was briefly a journeyman printer in Lawrence before he moved to Atchison and became chief clerk of the post office there. He was an express messenger on the Overland Stage Line between Atchison and Denver in January, 1863.
