Frank Albert Root was born 3 July 1837 in Binghampton, New York. He left northeastern Pennsylvania in 1857, joining thousands of other pioneers moving to Kansas territory. He was briefly a journeyman printer in Lawrence before he moved to Atchison and became chief clerk of the post office there. He was an express messenger on the Overland Stage Line between Atchison and Denver in January, 1863. From December, 1863, to October, 1864, he served as mail agent at Latham, now Greeley, Weld County, Colorado. Frank A. Root returned to newspaper publishing in 1865 and frequently moved his family around to various northern Kansas towns establishing newspapers. In 1880, Frank left his family in Topeka and went to Gunnison, Colorado, to start the Daily Review. George Root, Frank's son who followed his father's footsteps in the publishing business, joined his father the following year to work on that paper. In 1886, Frank sold his interests in Gunnison and returned to Topeka along with George to start the firm of Frank A. Root and Sons. This firm published the Topeka Mail. In 1893 Frank sold the newspaper to Arthur Capper and spent much of the rest of his life writing. Frank Root died in 1926 at his son George's home. He had one other son and two daughters.
