Papers of John Warren, prominent Boston surgeon. The majority of his papers relate to his service as a surgeon in the Continental Army at hospitals in Cambridge, New York and vicinity, and Boston during the American Revolution, and concern care of the wounded, medical supplies, and movement of the hospital. Other papers after the war relate to his medical practice. Correspondents include his wife Abigail C. Warren, John Morgan, William Eustis, Andrew Craigie, Aquila Giles, Susanna Grafton, and one letter from George Washington.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. Warren (Harvard, Hon. M.D. 1786) attended Harvard College (A.B. 1771) and studied medicine with his brother Joseph and with Edward Augustus Holyoke in Salem, Mass.
