Cyrus Adler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883. He later received the first American Ph.D. in Semitics from Johns Hopkins University. He taught Semitic languages at Johns Hopkins from 1884 to 1893. Nathaniel Julius Reich was born in Sarvar, Hungary in 1882. He was the son of Rabbi Wilhelm Reich, who gave him his early rabbinical training. Reich received his Ph.D. in 1904 from the Lehranstaltfur Orientalische Sprachen in Vienna. specialization in Semitics, Paleography, Papyrology, Oriental history, and Egyptology.
