Francis L. Hawks papers, 1679-1964 [manuscript].

Scattered items relating to Francis L. Hawks's work in preparing his "History of North Carolina," consisting primarily of microfilm copies of items at the Episcopal Church Historical Society, Austin, Tex. Included are extracts from court records, church records, legislative and council journals, correspondence and other papers. Significantly represented is the correspondence of Clement Hall and that of John Stanly (1774-1834) relating to his disagreement with Richard Dobbs Spaight. Also included are lists of additional Hawks material in Austin, and two original items: a letter, 12 April 1858, to Hawks from historian George Bancroft, and a letter, 10 February 1860, from Hawks to North Carolina governor David L. Swain regarding a catalog of Bancroft's manuscript collection.
