Irby C. Nichols and family papers, 1862-1972.

Correspondence, printed items, financial papers, legal documents, memoirs, journals, pedagogical materials and photographs document the professional, business and personal lives of the Nichols family, primarily Irby C. Nichols and Pauline Wright Nichols. Sketches and other graphic materials reflect the artistic career of Pauline Wright Nichols. Personal correspondence includes numerous love letters between Pauline Wright and Irby Nichols during their courtship. Other personal letters are from family and friends, primarily from northeast Mississippi. Professional correspondence pertains to educational careers at various schools and universities. Business letters document Irby Nichols' real estate investments and Pauline Wright Nichols' design work. The majority of printed items pertain to New Orleans art and artists and Newcomb School of Art. The series also includes numerous early Mardi Gras ball invitations. Journals in the collection were kept by Pauline Wright as a young woman and by Irby Nichols while traveling and while earning his doctorate at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Class notebooks reflect pedagogy in the first third of the twentieth century, primarily for mathematics, arts and crafts, and Sunday school religion. Photographs in the collection include reproductions of Pauline Wright Nichols' art work, group photographs and portraits of Irby Nichols.

Irby Coghill Nichols (1882-1952), born in Eudora, Mississippi, served on the LSU faculty from 1917 to 1948 as a Professor of Math. He married Pauline Wright of Oxford, Mississippi in 1918. Pauline Wright Nichols studied art and design at Newcomb School of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. The Art Association of New Orleans exhibited her art work in 1913, 1915 and 1916.
