Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. In 1812, a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium was established to cope with the growing numnber of members in Western Pennsylvania. At the sixth general conference in 1816, it was decided that the conference would petition the ministerium for permission to form a separate body. In 1818, the Joint Synod of Ohio was formed.
