Ernest Ludwig Eliel was born in Cologne Germany in 1921. He left Germany in 1938 after living in Scotland, Canada, and Cuba where he received his degree from the University of Havana he came to live in the United States in 1946. In 1948 after receiving his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana he received a teaching appointment at the University of Notre Dame where he remained until 1972.
