Ernest Ludwig Eliel was born in Cologne Germany in 1921. He left Germany in 1938 after living in Scotland, Canada, and Cuba where he received his degree from the University of Havana he came to live in the United States in 1946. In 1948 after receiving his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana he received a teaching appointment at the University of Notre Dame where he remained until 1972. In 1972 he joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a William F. Kenan Jr. Professor of Chemistry. Eliel's specialties are stereochemistry and conformational analysis. His book on stereochemistry called Topics in Stereochemistry is still considered a standard text. Eliel served as president of the American Chemical Society in 1992. In 1996 he was awarded their highest honor, the Priestley Medal. He also recieved the NAS Award for Chemistry in Service to Society in 1997.
