Brown's personal papers, including correspondence, clippings, photographs, and artifacts. Much of the collection centers on the Browns' World War I service, Hilton Jr.'s death and burial in France, and Hilton Sr.'s voyage to France in 1919. War materials include correspondence, postcards, photographs, artifacts, and drawings. Family materials include letters, college notes, writings, and photos, and concern sons Paul, Arch,and Hilton Jr. and wife Jennie Hannah Brown. Hilton Sr.'s materials include newsclippings, programs, invitations, and items concerning the war and Butler University.

A native and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Ind., Hilton U. Brown Sr. graduated from Butler University in 1882. He went to work for the INDIANAPOLIS NEWS in 1881, and worked there as a reporter, editor, general manager, and vice president. During World War I he was a European war correspondent. Brown's sons Paul V., Arch A., and Hilton U. Jr. served in the war; Hilton Jr. died in service.
