Murphy John Sylvest papers, 1929-1972.

Papers consist of biographical and genealogical information pertaining to the Sylvest family of Mississippi and Washington County, La., most of it assembled or written by Murphy John Sylvest. They include typewritten notes about the order of business at family meetings; programs for Sylvest family reunions; letters concerning family meetings to help maintain the Sylvest family plot in Tangipahoa Parish, La.; correspondence with the Portuguese consulate in New York pertaining to efforts of Sylvest to find information regarding Catholic churches in the Lisbon area that his relatives may have attended; typewritten reminiscences by Sylvest of his paternal grandparents, Francis Sylvest and Martha Stevenson Sylvest; and notes from a 1929 meeting between Sylvest and Governor Huey P. Long concerning his impeachment. The papers also include two photographs of Sylvest dating from the 1950s.

Huey Long Pierce, Louisiana governor and United States senator, was born 30 August 1893, near Winnfield, Winn Parish, Louisiana, and died 10 September 1935. He studied law and practiced in Winnfield after 1915; served as Louisiana public service commissioner (1921-1926); was elected governor of Louisiana (1928); was elected to the United States Senate (1930); and organized the Share-Our-Wealth Society (1934) for which he had national support. Murphy John Sylvest was born in Washington Parish, La. He attended the State Normal School in Natchitoches, La., and worked as an educator and a psychologist.
