Papers, 1877, 2008, and undated, document the life and writing career of Fox. The papers are divided into the following subseries, which are organized alphabetically by topic, title, or name, and then chronologically, unless otherwise noted. Biographical Materials, 1886-2008 (Scattered), and undated, 1 box (.5 cubic feet), includes materials documenting Fox's life, literary career, death, education, research, and homes, including census records and newspaper clippings. Photographs, 1877-1953 (Scattered), and undated, 3 boxes (1.5 cubic feet) of Fox, her friends, family, activities, travels, Mackinaw City (Mich.) homes, and various research topics. Business Correspondence, 1899-1953, 1955, 1958, and undated, 6 boxes (3 cubic feet), consists of chronologically arranged communications from editors, including thank you notes, rejection letters, constructive criticism and suggestions, and royalty checks, as well as correspondence with hotels. Personal Correspondence, consists mainly of correspondence to Fox from her close friends and relatives, minor friends and relatives, and admirers, including both adults and children, 1912-1952, and undated, 3 boxes (1.5 cubic feet) . These letters cover a variety of topics but mainly discuss health issues, family news, and Fox's research, publications, and travel plans. A group of more generic fan letters, from adults and children, 1920-1950s, 2 boxes (1 cubic foot) is also included. There is one folder of Personal Correspondence from Fox to friends and relatives, 1883-1952, and one folder concerning damage and repairs to her home, 1926. Fox's Research Notes, 1901-1943, and undated, 1 box (.5 cubic feet) includes a bibliography, notes, photographic, and reference materials. The bulk of the collection consists of Fox's Stories, which may include photographs and lists. These are divided into the following subseries: Handwritten, 1921-1943, and undated, 5 boxes (2.5 cubic feet); Published, 1899-1952, and undated, 2 boxes (1 cubic foot) consists of clippings of her published stories; Typed Stories are subdivided into the following topics: Activities, Greeting Card Suggestions, Plays, and Poems, including paper dolls and small games, 1934-1944 (Scattered), and undated, 1 box (.5 cubic foot); Animal Stories, including insects and birds, 19178-1948, and undated, 6 boxes (3 cubic feet); Buildings, Countries, Events, and Places Stories, 1912-1947, and undated, 3 boxes (1.5 cubic feet), including the United States and Bermuda, among others; Famous People Stories, including royalty, politicians, inventors, explorers, soldiers, and American heroes, 1923-1952, and undated, 3 boxes (1.5 cubic feet); Indian Tales, Famous Indians, and Captivity Stories, 1928-1950, and undated, 2 boxes (1 cubic foot); Michigan Stories, 1914-1945, and undated, 1 box (.5 cubic foot), including important Michigan people and events, mostly based in and around Mackinaw City, and also stories of local children and friends of Fox's. There are at least thirty such stories in the collection. Miscellaneous Stories including trees, plants, statues, art, inventions, and common day items, 1910-1952, and undated, 6 boxes (3 cubic feet). Religious, Holidays, Saints, and Christmas Stories, includes a lot of information on Quakers, 1917-1946, and undated, 2 boxes (1 cubic foot). Volumes, 4 boxes (2 cubic feet) total include: Accounts, 1901-1947 (27 v.); Address books, 1919-1932, 1940 (3 v.); Diaries, 1917-1952 (14 v.), Quotations, 1898, 1943 (1 v.), and Story Notes, 1915-1949, and undated (34 v.). The Accounts note which stories she sent to publishers, which were published, and what she was paid for them. Her Diaries consist of brief, sometimes intermittent notes, mainly about her health, travel and social plans and events, and her research and writing. Her Story Notes include handwritten notes, clippings, name cards, correspondence, and other material documenting her research. All of the above are letter-size or smaller materials. The last box (.5 cubic foot) includes legal-size publishing contracts, 1902-1951, some partial research notes on Paw Paw (Mich.), undated, and a Scrapbook, 1897,1945. One oversized folder of publications with stories by Fox, and Index cards to the correspondence, 1899-1944 (4 card boxes) complete the collection.

Frances Margaret "Madge" Fox was born in South Framingham (Mass.) on June 23, 1870. She was the only child of James and Frances S. M. (Francks) Fox. Mrs. Fox died twelve days after Madge was born. Madge was abused by her father physically and psychologically. As a result of her fear of men, Madge never married.
