Lawrence I'Anson was born 21 April 1907 in Portsmouth, Va. to James and Emma Warren I'Anson. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1928 and took his law degree from the University of Virginia. In 1933, he married Mary Frances Tuttle. I'Anson served as Commonwealth's Attorney for Portsmouth, Va. He was appointed judge of the Hustings Court for Portsmouth. In 1958, J. The Supreme Court of Appeals was created by an act of the General Assembly passed during its May 1779 session. The new court's antecedent was the General Court, which after it was reestablished under the constitution of 1776, shared appellate jurisdiction while the supreme court was restricted to civil cases, but the state constitution adopted in 1851 abolished the General Court.
