Papers of Constance Frick Irwin, 1918-1995.

The papers contain autobiographical sketches, correspondence with family members and fan mail from Irwin's readers in the 1960s and 1970s and materials about the organizations to which she belonged, namely, the Evansville, Ind., branch of the American Association of University Women, the Hoosier Craft Guild, the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Iowa City Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, and the Nineteenth Century Club. There are also materials documenting her work as a high school librarian in Indiana and as a professor of library science at the University of Iowa. The bulk of the collection, however, consists of records of Irwin's extensive literary production which includes eleven articles and five books for children, approximately 70 articles written for adult audiences, four plays, poems, and nine books for adults, of which five are unpublished. Records for these works contain the author's original typescripts and, for the published books for adults, research notes, original drafts, correspondence, and reviews. There are also materials, largely correspondence with family and friends, documenting Irwin's life in the WAVES during World War II, providing an eyewitness insight into life in the nation's capitol during the war years. The collection concludes with portraits and photographs of Irwin and photographic slides from her travels to New York, Mexico, and Europe.
