Irwin, Constance H. Frick, 1913-
Variant namesAuthor, librarian, and professor; resident of Iowa City, Iowa. Born in Evansville, Ind., Constance "Connie" Frick attended Indiana University, graduating in 1934. Her first employment during the Depression was as a bookstore clerk in her home town of Evansville. She subsequently was employed as a librarian and journalism instructor, first in an Indianapolis suburb high school and then in Evansville. She completed her M.A. in literature in 1942. Her career as awriter began with the publication in 1943 of her thesis, The dramatic criticism of George Jean Nathan.
Also in 1942 Frick volunteered for the Women's Naval Reserve (WAVES) and served on active duty in the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C., until December 1945. After earning a library science degree from Columbia University she returned to her previous teaching position in Evansville in 1947. In 1954 Frick married William R. Irwin, an English professor at the University of Iowa.
Irwin continued her writing career in Iowa City where she also taught at the University's School of Library Science from 1963 to 1967. She died on June 20, 1995.
