Papers of Lonabelle "Kappie" Kaplan Spencer, 1964-1996.

Scrapbook, correspondence, clippings, programs, newsletters, photographs, and artifacts documenting Spencer's service as a Girl Scout leader and as a promoter of women's rights. In particular the papers document her work in three areas: discrimination against women in trust funds; discrimination against women in newspaper publications and her campaign to have them include the first names of wives along with their husband's in obituaries and in anniversary and wedding announcements; and her efforts to promote dual listings for married women in Iowa telephone directories. Also included are materials documenting Spencer's work at the Iowa Women's Meeting and her attendance as a delegate to the National Women's Conference in Houston, Texas in 1977 in promotion of the International Women's Year. Her involvement in politics is documented by materials from her unsuccessful campaign in 1976 for the Iowa Senate, by materials from Mary Grefe's campaign for the Iowa House of Representatives in 1984 which Spencer supported, and by papers concerning Spencer's appointment by Governor Robert Ray to the Iowa 2000 State Commonwealth Conference.
