Records of the Iowa ERA Coalition, 1916-1980 (bulk 1972-1980).

The records are comprised of administrative (budgets, minutes), campaign, fundraising, publicity, and planning files. There are also five audiocassettes, one pro-E.R.A. and four anti-E.R.A. Together they document Iowa's efforts to pass the E.R.A. and how that effort was defeated despite general support by a majority of the populace.

Margaret "Peg" Anderson succeeded Roxanne Barton Conlin as president of the Iowa Women's Political Caucus (IWPC) in 1975. In 1977 she served as an Iowa delegate to the National Women's Conference in Houston. She also headed the effort to pass an Equal Rights Amendment to the Iowa state constitution on the 1980 ballot. Comprised of approximately fifty member organizations, the Iowa ERA Coalition was formed in 1978 to rally support for the state Equal Rights Amendment. Margaret "Peg" Anderson, a longtime Iowa resident who had a varied political career, was the state chairperson and main spokesperson of the Iowa ERA Coalition. The Coalition was disbanded in 1980 when Iowa voters defeated the E.R.A. initiative by a 56 to 44 percent margin. From the description of Records of the Iowa ERA Coalition, 191...
