Carter Litchfield collection on the history of fatty materials, 1707-2007 (bulk dates, 1970-2007).

The Litchfield collection documents Carter Litchfield's activities as a chemist, historian and collector. Series I, Collection acquisitions (1966-2007) documents how Litchfield assembled his collection through purchases from private collectors and at auctions. Series II, Fats and fatty oils research materials (1956-1980) consists of Litchfield's own notebooks and quantitative data from research conducted at Procter & Gamble (fatty oils) and Rutgers (cetacean and sponge lipids). Series III, Olearius Editions files (1707-2007) includes business correspondence, accounts, drafts, proofs and notes for Litchfield's publications on oil mills, the oil industries, and oleomargarine stamps. Among the notes are early diaries and accounts (both originals and photocopies) for the Moravian Oil Mills at Bethlehem, Pa., and notes and drawings on other oil mills around the world. There are also programs and papers from professional conferences that Litchfield attended. Series IV, Julius Lewkowitsch papers (1865-1987) contain his research notes and manuscripts, including one for the unpublished seventh edition of the The Chemical Technology and Analysis of Oils, Fats and Waxes, as well as personal papers, estate papers, and obituaries. They also contain papers of his wife Katherine and daughter Elsa. Series V, Ellsworth C. Warner papers (1883-1934) include a letterbook, papers about his courtship and marriage to Mellie Bisbee and their subsequent divorce, along with a history of the Midland Linseed Oil Company. Series VI consists of a small collection (1810-1889) of correspondence of the French chemist M. E. Chevreul. Series VII, the papers of Litchfield's wife Carol, deal with her consulting work with Microbial Solutions. The audio-visual component of the Carter Litchfield collection has been transferred to the Pictorial Collections Dept. as accession no. PC 2007.227. Carter Litchfield's personal library of books, pamphlets and periodicals on the history of fatty materials has been transferred to the Imprints Dept., where it has been cataloged at the item level.

Charles Carter Litchfield was born on February 18, 1932, earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and began his career as a chemist for Procter & Gamble. During the 1950s, Litchfield worked in the Edible Research Section of the Chemical Division on shortening products such as Crisco and margarine oils. Because of this work, Litchfield developed an interest in the history of fatty oils, which include vegetable seed oils as well as lard, tallow and other ani...

In 1803, Chevreul began studying with N. Vauquelin at the Musʹeum d'Histoire Naturelle, becoming professor of chemistry there in 1830. In 1807, under Vauquelin's direction, Chevreul began investigating plant dyes. He isolated several natural dyes before turning to the chemistry of natural fats. Chevreul resumed his study of dyes in 1823, and, in 1824, succeeded C. Berthollet as director of dyeing at the Manufactures Royales des Gobelins. From the description of Correspondence and not...
