Collection includes five academic papers of Dr. Hulst's: a handwritten paper entitled "Artificial Multiple Personality," 19 pp., discussing hypnosis and multiple personalities, which he read at the World's Fair Congress, Medico-Legal International Section, Chicago, 1892, and a reprint of the paper which he also later read before the Psychological Section of the Medico-Legal Society, [1892] 8 pp.; two typed papers, one entitled "Uncle Sam Diabetic, 10 pp., undated [written during the 1930s-1940s, as it mentions Mr. Ickes], and a third paper entitled "Hypnosis", 25 pp., undated [after 1897], which again discusses hypnosis and multiple personalities. Also included are two reprints, one entitled "Some aspects of special interest bearing on the Roentgenological diagnosis of tuberculosis of the lungs", an address he made before the International Congress of the X-ray, Amsterdam, 22 pp., 1916; and "Examination of the lungs by Roentgenrays", 10 pp., reprinted from the Medical Record,1908. In addition there is a handwritten page by Mrs. Henry Hulst, dated Grand Rapids (Mich.), 1949, which describes some papers on hypnotism and x-rays that Dr. Hulst researched and wrote. Additional materials documenting his life and work from the Internet and the Grand Rapids Public Library's Biography & Portrait File, and the life of Mrs. Hulst, as well as portraits of both Hulsts (photocopies) are also included (28 pp.). The Clarke has three books on various topics written by Mrs. Hulst, which are separately cataloged.

Dr. Henry Hulst was born in Friesland province, the Netherlands, on June 25, 1859, the son of Rev. L. J. Hulst. Henry came to Ill. in 1859 and to Grand Rapids (Mich.) in 1876. Initially, Henry studied theology, but in 1888 he graduated as the president of his class from the medical school of the University of Michigan.
