Spivak was born in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Charlotte Ring and Lawrence E. Spivak, publisher of the American Mercury and co-producer of Meet the Press. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1947 and took graduate courses in history at Georgetown University. She worked as a reporter for the Washington Post (1948-1950) and as an editorial assistant at the American Mercury magazine (1951-1952).
