Margaret Emily Pagelson Howard was a physician who during the middle of the 1880s assisted in the maternity ward of the State Almshouse, Tewksbury, Massachusetts. There she met Dr. Herbert Burr Howard (1855-1923), who served as assistant physician (1884-1885, 1887-1891) and then as superintendent (1891-1897). Physician, Howard grew up in a medical family. Her mother, Margaret Emily (Pagelson) Howard, was a physician and her father, Herbert B. Howard, was director of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the first director of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.
