Committee files, 1963-1980.

The Committee Files series consists of records from the Subcommittee of Professors, Committee of Professors, Promotions and Reappointments committee, Faculty Meetings, Admissions Committee, and Future Committee. All contain minutes, memoranda, and correspondence. The Subcommittee of Professors and Committee of Professors files contain documents relating to faculty composition, promotions, evaluations, and tenure; successor searches; Affirmative Action; search initiations for new positions; student evaluations of faculty; student activism and alternative course structure. The Promotions and Reappointments committee files contain documents relating to methodologies and faculty evaluations, recommendations, and resignations. Faculty Meetings files contain documents relating to degree candidates, course schedules, lecture announcements, and the National Performance Board. The Admissions Committee files contain documents relating to admissions statistics, including applicants' race, gender, social status, undergraduate institutions and grades, and standardized test scores; race and gender in admission; admissions standards and policies; social class in admissions. Generally, these files document a time of change at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in what was turbulent time in the United States. National questions of race, gender, and class were being dealt with at HMS as well, in relation to admissions and faculty composition. The records in this series shed light on these discussions by utilizing qualitative information, in the form of evaluations, policies, and recommendations, and quantitative information, in the form of statistics. Ad Hoc Committee files consist of records maintained by the Office of the Dean for faculty searches and promotions at HMS and its affiliated institutions.
