Documents and acts relating to the first, second, and third Mexican Provincial Councils : ms. and printed, 1555-1773.

A collection of documents, in Spanish and Latin, from Mexico, Spain, the Philippines, and Peru, relating to the first three ecclesiastical provincial councils of New Spain and the Philippines, convoked respectively in 1555 and 1565 by Archbishop Alonso de Montúfar, and in 1585 by Archbishop Pedro Moya de Contreras, centering about the Third Council; bearing upon various questions-religious, social, or political-of concern to both colonists and Indians. Volume I, 1555-1622, contains the corrected catechism of the First Council, original acts of the Second, contemporary copies of decrees of the Third, and various documents concerning the latter. Volume II has the corrected Spanish version of the decrees and edicts issued by the Third Council, and related material. Volume III, approximately 1555-1585, includes work papers for the Third Council-convocations, attendance, instructions, reports, relevant papal bulls, and copies or summaries of papers prepared by earlier synods in Mexico, Lima, and Spain. Volume IV, 1581-1773, has work papers of the Third Council, but consists primarily of eight questions proposed for its consideration, together with documents of the Councils held in Lima, 1582, and Toledo, 1582-1583, and some miscellaneous matter.
