Eugene L. Snow collection, 1929-1964.

The Eugene L. Snow Collection consists of photographs, photographic transparencies, reports, published articles, and tape transcriptions relating mostly to the topic of reindeer herding in the lower Kuskokwim River, Kuskokwim Bay, and Nunivak Island regions of Alaska. The collection contains approximately 480 photographic images taken in Bethel, Akiak, Mekoryuk (Nunivak Island), and other Alaskan locations. Photographic subjects include reindeer herding, the fishing industry in southwestern Alaska, Alaska Natives, activities of the Snow Transportation Company, and members of the Snow family.

John P. Snow (1897-1968) and his wife Romayne A. Snow (1896-1979) went to Eek, Alaska, in 1929 as teachers for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and transferred to Akiak, Alaska, the following year. Circa 1934 John was made the reindeer supervisor in Akiak, and also acted as the district head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
