John P. Snow (1897-1968) and his wife Romayne A. Snow (1896-1979) went to Eek, Alaska, in 1929 as teachers for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and transferred to Akiak, Alaska, the following year. Circa 1934 John was made the reindeer supervisor in Akiak, and also acted as the district head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In that capacity, he built the reindeer butchering plant and cold storage facility on Nunivak Island. Circa 1945 his superiors discovered that he had never finished high school and declared him unqualified for his position, which he was forced to leave. In 1947 John and his son, Eugene L. Snow, started the Snow Transportation Company, a tug, barge, and trucking firm, in Bethel, Alaska. The company did all the freight handling and trucking in Bethel, and served fourteen villages on Kuskokwim Bay and the lower Kuskokwim River. Due to declining health, John went into semi-retirement in 1960, and the business was sold to local Bethel interests in 1966. John died in Seattle, Washington, in 1968.
