In June 1977 the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of Australia joined together to form the Uniting Church in Australia. Plans for this merger were first discussed early this century. In 1956 a commission was set up to draft the basis of union and in the early 1970s votes were held on this issue. Reverend Dorothy McMahon was born in Tasmania, the daughter of a Methodist Minister. She is a former pre-school teacher who, during the 1960s, was active in church, peace and feminist movements. She was ordained as a Uniting Church Minister in 1982 and has received the United Nations Australian Organisation Peace Award (1986) and the Australian Human Rights Medal (1988).
