Reverend Dorothy McMahon was born in Tasmania, the daughter of a Methodist Minister. She is a former pre-school teacher who, during the 1960s, was active in church, peace and feminist movements. She was ordained as a Uniting Church Minister in 1982 and has received the United Nations Australian Organisation Peace Award (1986) and the Australian Human Rights Medal (1988). She gained prominence during the late 1980s for her stand against the right wing Australian National Action and their attacks on the Pitt Street Uniting Church. Sydney and its congregation.
