Sally Bird made the acquaintance of Manoly Lascaris and Patrick White while walking her pug in the park. Subsequently Manoly Lascaris sent her a copy of O Pug! by Stevie Smith. Professor Hu was born in Tianjin, China in 1935. He is the head of the Australian Studies Centre, Beijing Foreign Studies University.
