Professor Hu was born in Tianjin, China in 1935. He is the head of the Australian Studies Centre, Beijing Foreign Studies University. His academic posts include Deputy Chairman, English Department, Beijing Foreign Studies University (1981-84), Vice Chairman, National Committee on Foreign Language Textbook Evaluation Syllabus Designing (1985-91) and Academic Vice President, Beijing Foreign Studies University (1984-91). Hu was introduced to Patrick White in 1980 when he was doing his M.A. at Sydney University. Hu was awarded a National Library Harold White Fellowship in 1993.
