Winslow Homer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1836. He was raised in Cambridge, where he developed a love of art and the outdoors. At the age of 19 he began his career as an illustrator, apprenticing at the J.H. Bufford lithographic firm in Boston. He then decided to become a freelance illustrator. Albert Ten Eyck Gardner (1909-1967) was Associate Curator of Paintings and Sculpture in the American Art Dept. of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1956 until his death. He wrote several books on American art, as well as numerous articles and special studies on 18th and 19th century American paintings and sculptures.
