James Goudie, formerly of Quebec, Canada, built the vessel in 1830-31 and called it the Royal William in honor of the reigning sovereign of Great Britain. The vessel was designed as a steamship to sail between Quebec and Halifax; was towed to Montreal to have the engine installed by the firm of Bennett and Henderson, St. Mary's Foundry. Goodenough, J. G. (James Graham), 1830-1875

Commodore Goodenough saw service in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, being at the China station from 1856-1861. In 1873 he commanded the Australian station, visited the islands and had part in the preparation of annexation of the Fiji Islands to the British Crown.
