Commodore Goodenough saw service in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, being at the China station from 1856-1861. In 1873 he commanded the Australian station, visited the islands and had part in the preparation of annexation of the Fiji Islands to the British Crown. He was wounded by natives in New Hebrides 12 Aug. 1875 and died eight days later.
