Lieut. Phillip Parker King undertook a number of hydrographic surveying and charting voyages around Australia between 1817 and 1822 in H.M. Cutter Mermaid and H.M. Brig Bathurst. Harriet King accompanied her husband to Australia in 1817 when he was engaged in survey work of the coastline. Three of their sons were born at Parramatta, N.S.W. before their return to England in 1823. In 1826 she returned to New South Wales to manage Dunhevid, their farm at St Mary's, while P.P. Philip Gidley King (1758-1808) was third governor of New South Wales. Phillip Parker King (1791-1856), son of Philip Gidley and Anna Josepha King, followed a naval and surveying career.
