Papers [manuscript]. 1889-1939.

Correspondence, newspaper cuttings, lecture and other papers of A.C English. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, 1889-1912. Includes correspondence with the Government Secretary's Office, British New Guinea, concerning native labour and with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture concerning agricultural plants. Also includes: "British New Guinea lecture and description of lantern slides", 1904; draft of "The Superannuation Ordinance, 1917", a petition to the Lieut. Governor of the Territory of Papua, and a collection of newspaper cuttings concerning English, Sir William Macgregor, Sir Hubert Murray and the administration of the Territory of Papua.

Sir William MacGregor born in Scotland 1875 became chief medical officer in Fiji. In 1888 appointed Administrator of British New Guinea. Instituted a police force and encouraged exploration. Albert Charles English travelled to New Guinea in 1883 as a collector of natural history specimens. After the area he worked in was declared a British protectorate, English worked with the administration and was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1891.
