The papers include diaries, correspondence, manuscripts of cable messages, scripts for radio broadcasts, log books, pilot's certificate and licence, maps, route handbook, competitor's badge, flight record card, menu, school report, accident report, memorial record and sermon addresses, 16 mm. motion picture films, newspaper cuttings and photographs.

Aviator. "Jimmy" Melrose was born in Burnside, South Australia, the only son of James Melrose (d.1922). In 1934 he flew to England solo in record time (8 days, hours). Was the only solo flyer to finish the MacRobertson England-Australia Air Race in October 1934. Participated in the search for Charles Kingsford Smith in 1935.
